SEC Football: Will Trent Richardson Be The Best Running Back in the SEC in 2011?

Mark Ingram is gone. He will no longer steal, dominate, or usurp the spotlight that many felt Trent Richardson should have had long ago. Richardson has been a spark plug for the Alabama Crimson Tide since the first time he touched the football in Tuscaloosa and, now that Ingram looks to recreate his star as a New Orleans Saint, Richardson finally has his opportunity to shine brightly for his team.

Is he ready to be 'The Man'?

Some fans and pundits question how well Richardson is capable of playing minus Ingram in the backfield.  After all, it was Ingram who spear-headed the Tide's 2009 SEC Championship against the Florida Gators—which led to them securing their first National Championship in more than a decade—so it was clear that Richardson will still running without the expectations of being both a No. 1 back or a former Heisman Trophy winner.

That said, Richardson did a fine job holding down the fort while Ingram sat with a knee injury and, at times, it was apparent that if he'd had more consistent touches per game, he might have been able to do a lot more damage on the ground (2010: 112 carries, 700 yards, 7 touchdowns, and 6.25 ypc average) than he actually did.

Bearing all that in mind, does that mean he's poised to breakout in 2011 and be the best running back in the SEC?

Perhaps, but the Alabama quarterback situation will bear watching in the early going as some are not factoring the loss of Greg McElroy into the equation—his experience and leadership will definitely change things offensively—and there will be a period of adjustment in the way the Tide's offense is executed as they get accustomed to a less experienced quarterback leading the way. 

While A.J. McCarron appeared to play well in spot duty last season, his spring performance wasn't enough to make coach Saban name him the outright starter for 2011—Saban has even intimated at playing two quarterbacks this season—so it's unclear what or how many quarterbacks will start under-center for the Tide this year.

Even more, the Tide will have to find a new set of hands in the passing game and while the offense was fairly balanced last season—passing only slightly more than they ran—a majority of those receptions went the way of Julio Jones, who is now gone, leaving Marquis Maze and Darius Hanks with big shoes to fill at the wide receiver position.

That level of uncertainty in the passing game means more pressure on Trent Richardson to make it happen early and often, at least at the start, as the Tide may need to lean on the run a lot more this year than last. And, given Richardson's propensity to play all-out on every down (recklessly at times) you feel a need to pray that Eddie Lacy is ready to get back to being a reliable No. 2 option.

Lacy had issues with ball security last season, but appears to be much improved—if his spring performance is any indication—and he could be poised for a statistically better 2011.

Richardson will need all of these things working in his favor if he is going to become the guy whom many feel has Heisman potential. There's no doubt he has the talent, the only question is if 2011 will finally be his time?

Steve Spurrier Gets Cocky and Cat's Go Wild: Kentucky Steals Big Win Over Top 10 Foe (VIDEO)

Remember all that chatter about Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks suffering a letdown this week over the Kentucky Wildcats, after defeating the former No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in Columbia last week? Well, that came to fruition tonight as the Kentucky Wildcats and, new head coach, Joker Phillips, got their first signature win over a ranked opponent.

The Gamecocks were leading the game with less than 1:00 minute to go in the fourth-quarter, but then Kentucky quarterback, Mike Hartline connected with Randall Cobb for a 24 yard touchdown reception—followed by a two-point conversion—making it 31-28 Kentucky with less than :15 seconds to play.

Stephen Garcia took over on his own 31 but, two big completions to both D.L. Moore and Tori Gurley placed the Gamecocks within striking distance of a field goal. Then, the unthinkable happened, Spurrier used his final timeout to draw up a play for one last shot at the end zone—he likely should have just gone for the tie but, for whatever reason, he decided to try and go for the win instead.

His gamble ended up being a poor one as Stephen Garcia was intercepted in the end zone—Wildcats win:



So close...yet, so very far away.

Nice win for the Cats' though, after the close loss to Auburn last week, they were bound to come out on the winning end of one of these eventually.

College Football: The SEC's Wild, Wild West And It's Effect on the BCS

As of Sunday morning, seven SEC teams are in the Top 25 of the Associated Press Poll (AP). Four of those seven teams are from the western division of the SEC—three of them are in the Top 10.

The SEC West became very interesting after the Alabama Crimson Tide got rolled up in Columbia, by the South Carolina Gamecocks, over the weekend.
No. 7 Auburn, the team that few gave a chance, rallied to defeat the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday.

That made their record 6-0 coming into this weekend's match-up with No. 12 Arkansas, down on 'The Plains'.

Arkansas will come in with "upset" on their mind as they try to get back into the Top 10 at the expense of their division rival.

Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, and LSU are all in a position to win the division, and represent the western half of the conference in the SEC Championship Game in December.

As things stand right now, Arkansas would need a little help because they lost to the Tide, but none of the other teams (Auburn, Alabama, or LSU) have played each other yet, so there is still plenty of SEC Championship hope for the Razorbacks.

Even more, after Alabama's loss to South Carolina, the BCS will be looking for a new SEC team to hitch it's wagon to, and the story of the "Cardiac Cats" (Auburn) or "Lucky Les" (LSU) seems fitting in this year of anything can happen in college football.

Who has the best chance to come out on top?

At this stage, Auburn's schedule sets up the most favorably. They face Arkansas, LSU, and Georgia at home in the coming weeks, and will have a bye prior to taking on Alabama in the Iron Bowl on November 27th.

Alabama still has a chance to get back on track as well, however, after all, the loss they suffered was not within their division and , if they can reshuffle the deck a bit, they have just as much a shot as any one in the west to come out on top.

LSU seems to be playing with fire, but the replacement of Jordan Jefferson for Jarrett Lee may prove to be the best decision Les Miles has made this season. Jefferson was reeling and his poor play was becoming a drain on what little offense his team could muster.

Add to that, Miles seems to be back to his old 2007 tricks—calling plays like a Maverick and getting all the lucky bounces he can possibly hope for on the football field.

As for Bobby Petrino's crew, Ryan Mallett may be the catalyst for that offense, but the team will win or lose with Mallett's poise—or lack thereof. If the senior quarterback can maintain his focus, Arkansas can still be the surprise team that many picked them to be at the start of the season. The game against Auburn could be the start of something big or the end of a dream.

The SEC West has become a wild place to be this season. What team will be the last one standing when the smoke finally clears?...

Steve Spurrier Advised Richt To Take UNC Job—The Lady's Friday Links (9/10)

Before Mark Richt was hired as the head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs, he was simply a Florida State assistant with an important career-decision to make. So, what did he do, he asked a fellow Florida native for his opinion—that fellow native's name was Steve Spurrier.

Spurrier, who was coaching the Florida Gators at the time, advised Richt to take the North Carolina job. Luckily, for Bulldog fans and Mark Richt, he decided to pass on Spurriers advice.

Speaking of Steve Spurrier, he's got problems of his own. The NCAA (an organization that has been busy spreading its goodwill this offseason) has alerted the South Carolina football program that it's next stop will be Columbia.

Auburn managed to hold off the Mississippi State Bulldogs on Thursday night as they escaped Starkville with a 17-14 win. That said, Cameron Newton has a ton of work to do in selling the play action—he's going to fool absolutely no one this season.

The Alabama Crimson Tide are, of course, the favorites to win the game over Penn State this weekend. Joe Paterno doesn't seem intimidated by the prospect of entering Tuscaloosa, with a true freshman quarterback, and an unproven set of linebackers. I guess he knows something that Nick Saban doesn't—*shrugs*.

Florida Gator center, Mike Pouncey, is doing all he can to fix his center-to-quarterback exchange issues—including asking the good Lord for help.

According to this article, 40 percent of the ten loudest college football stadiums reside in the Big Ten—30 percent are in the SEC (Florida's Ben Hill Griffin pops in at No. 1).

Former UNC Tarheel football player, Chris Hawkins, says he's "not an agent". Somehow I doubt the fans who cheer for the Georgia Bulldogs will give a damn.

Bill King echoes the sentiment of many when discussing the A.J. Green situation: A.J. was wrong, but the NCAA is being a bit too harsh.

As if the Oregon Ducks didn't look good enough last week—winning 72-0—now they get back their star running back to boot. LaMichael James is done serving his suspension and will be with the team on Saturday when they square off against the Vols in Knoxville.
